Important Screening Candidates

Who Is Oral Pathology For?

Everyone benefits from oral pathology screening, but certain individuals have higher risk factors that make regular evaluation especially important. You should have suspicious areas evaluated promptly regardless of risk factors.

Anyone with Suspicious Oral Lesions

If you have unusual spots, growths, persistent sores, or changes in your mouth that don’t heal within two weeks, professional evaluation is essential for proper diagnosis.

High-Risk Individuals

You use tobacco, drink alcohol regularly, have family history of oral cancer, or have other risk factors that increase your likelihood of developing oral pathology conditions.

People with Chronic Oral Symptoms

You experience persistent pain, numbness, difficulty swallowing, or other chronic oral symptoms that might indicate underlying pathological conditions requiring evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oral Pathology FAQs

We understand you have concerns about oral pathology screening and what abnormal findings might mean. These are the most common questions our patients ask about oral disease detection and treatment.

What are the warning signs of oral cancer?

Warning signs include persistent mouth sores, white or red patches, chronic pain or numbness, difficulty swallowing, lumps in the neck, and changes in voice. Any abnormality lasting more than two weeks should be evaluated professionally.
Oral cancer affects about 54,000 Americans annually, with men twice as likely as women to develop it. Risk increases with age, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Early detection significantly improves survival rates.
Not always, but biopsy is the only way to definitively diagnose suspicious lesions. Some obviously benign conditions may not require biopsy, while others need tissue examination for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.
We examine all areas of your mouth, tongue, throat, and neck, looking for abnormalities in color, texture, or consistency. We document findings and may photograph areas for monitoring or perform biopsies when indicated.
Oral biopsies are performed under local anesthesia and cause minimal discomfort during the procedure. Post-operative pain is typically mild and well-managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications.
Common conditions include canker sores, fibrous growths, cysts, leukoplakia (white patches), and various benign tumors. While most oral lesions are benign, professional evaluation is necessary to distinguish them from serious conditions.
Many oral pathology conditions can be prevented or risk reduced by avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, maintaining good oral hygiene, eating a healthy diet, and having regular dental checkups for early detection.
Annual screening is recommended for most people, with more frequent evaluation for high-risk individuals. Anyone with suspicious lesions should seek immediate evaluation regardless of their last screening.
Five-year survival rates are over 90% when oral cancer is detected early (Stage I), but drop to less than 50% for advanced stages. This dramatic difference emphasizes the importance of early detection through regular screening.
Some benign lesions require removal if they cause discomfort, interfere with function, or have potential for malignant transformation. Others can be monitored if they’re not problematic and have low risk of change.
